When most of us think of click through rate, we immediately think of paid search traffic such as Guaranteeed on Top Search placement. While it is important for your site to have a good CTR throughout a paid search campaign, many sites ignore this statistic when it comes to organic search. While there is no analytics program that we’re aware of that can tell you how many impressions your organic search listing has received, there is one thing to keep in mind – an organic listing is like a free advertisement for your company and you need to make sure that you are making the most of it.

In our experience there are a few basic things to at least get you started on improving your “organic” or “natural” site ranking on search engines. Here are just a few:

Content is King

Make your site content both useful and relevant to the user. Keywords should be liberally used throughout content, but not to the point of overkill. Remember, you’re trying to make your site a meaningful resource for your visitors, and by doing so, you enhance your organic prospects. Having nothing but a mishmash of keywords that don’t make any sense defeat the purpose of having a site altogether.

Metatags

While site metatags don’t carry the weight they once did, they are still a component of what the search engines crawl and use to determine keywords and content of your site. We recommend you use meaningful and relevant keywords to your content without “overcooking” the keywords by adding an excessive amount of them in your tags.

Adding keywords to your TITLE tag, as an example, may be helpful in boosting site keyword density. The Title and URL of the page are the two most important places to have your keywords. It has been proven over and over again that you can get onto Google’s first page for low competition phrases by doing only those things done and nothing else. While having a title state “Welcome to ABC Widgets” is a nice warm fuzzy friendly greeting, stating “ABC Widgets – Airplane, Jet, Airline Widgets” is far more descriptive of what you actually are. Rather than using a file name such as “air10001.htm”, we’d recommend calling it “airplane_widget_for_self_repairing_propeller.htm” as a way of adding keyword to the URL itself.

External Links

External links have become more heavily weighted by search engines with the advent of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and MySpace. They’re free and easy to set up. We recommend setting up accounts at these sites, and at least periodically maintain relevant helpful updates for your visitors. Make sure your account points back to your main web site. Also, exchanging links can be helpful, but we recommend staying within your industry or sites relevant to yours. To simply put in a link to a tire company when you sell paper clips would be useless, and may cause confusion amongs your customers more than anything else.

Image ALT Tags

A simple way of boosting your organics. Simply place relevant keywords behind images on your site. These tags are read by the search spiders, and will be given some weight by search spiders.

Submit a Google Sitemap

Either create a Google account yourself, or have your webmaster do it. A sitemap submission tells Google who you are, and what’s on your site. They also provide detailed stats on visits to your site, including keywords being used to find you, click through r ates, and keyword Google page positioning, i.e., your ranking is 170, so you’re well down the ladder on page 17.

These by no means are the only rhings that will enhance your organic/natural rankings with search engines, but they would be a good start!
